How to Use The Guide as a Teaching Tool
Many teachers in today's modern society are beginning to understand the power of using film in the classroom. They are finding that using films in the classroom are engaging to students, because it is easy for them to connect with popular movies. Teachers can use the showing and analyzing of key (main) scenes to help students grasp concepts being taught in the classroom, and to make connections between what they are learning with how it manifests itself in the world around them.
According to the article "Reel Teaching = Real Learning" written by Brad Smilanich and Nicole Lafreniere, using film as a teaching tool is a fun way to engage students who normally seem reluctant to participate in class activities. The article discuses many ideas, but one of the main focuses is that using film in the classroom allows students to view abstract concepts that they might not have previously understood without the visual aid. Enveloped in the technological world of today's society, students can have an easier time in learning when they see the topic in front of them.
The Emperor's New Groove is a great movie to use in the classroom to work with social studies and English language arts concentrations. Our film guide is based around the NC Common Core Essential Standards for 6th graders, which are listed under the ELA/Social Studies tabs of the guide. We also used current North Carolina textbooks for 6th grade social studies to look for ways to connect historical topics into the lesson, which are shown on our resources page. In using this film in the classroom, we would be able to help students learn how to be literate when analyzing a "text", while also teaching them key aspects about ancient civilizations in Latin America -which is part of their curriculum for World History.
